When Lafayette traveled up the Ohio River, he left the steamboat at today’s Wheeling, West Virginia to take a 166-mile detour to visit his friend Albert Gallatin at his wildness home at Friendship Hill before continuing onto Pittsburgh. This is possible because the National Road was completed in 1823. Lafayette and Gallatin became close friends when he was the US minister to France (1816-1823). Prior to this he was Secretary of the Treasury (1801-1823). He developed a plan to finance our first federally funded national road to help unite the country as Lafayette did in 1825. Lafayette followed today’s National Road Heritage Corridor (US Route 40) to meet his old friend at Uniontown before going to Friendship Hill. The National Park Service is celebrating the meeting of these two friends with a special NPS Passport Book Stamp during 2025.
