Lafayette Visits Maine Historical Society

Wednesday, June 25, 2025

10 a.m. ET

Maine Historical Society, 489 Congress Street, Portland, ME

Free and open to the public.

In 1825-26, the last surviving major general of the Revolutionary War Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette toured United States, receiving a hero’s welcome everywhere he went.  He visited Portland, Maine on June 24 – 26, greeted with great fanfare and an address by Stephen Longfellow.  Maine Historical Society will mark the 200th anniversary of this historic visit by welcoming Lafayette once again at our campus on Congress Street on June 25, 2025! We invite the public to hear an address by local historian and former state representative Herb Adams and to meet Lafayette and his friend and comrade-at-arms Henry Knox! A pop-up exhibit featuring pieces from the MHS collection associated with Lafayette’s 1825 visit will be on display and light refreshments will be served.
