Lafayette is welcomed by Barnard, VT

June 28, 2025 @ 12:45 pm1:15 pm

Royalton Turnpike at Sayer Road, Barnard

East Barnard — 12:45 pm The Barnard, Vermont segment of the bicentennial commemoration of Marquis De Lafayette’s tour will take place on June 28, 2025, 12:45-1:15 at the original stop on the tour, the Aikin Stand. There was no formal activity at this site. The Barnard Selectboard spread word that the Lafayette coach was to stop at the Aikin stand to water the horses and change the team. Town and family lore reports that 1000 people walked or rode to the Stand to see him. He was greeted by the selectboard while he “stretched his legs”. Since there is no ceremony to recreate, the Barnard Historical Society is using this stop to demonstrate what his contribution to the United States produced. He will be met by people wearing costumes from any period since 1825. There will be at least one “Votes for Women” sash, possibly a Civil War soldier.

The selectboard will greet him and introduce themselves, Yankee Doodle will be played, and a three-gun salute. The event will conclude with a loud “hurrah” as Lafayette departs for the next engagement.
