March 4, 2025March 5, 2025

Lafayette, hero of Liberty, Justice, and Equality is back! Celebrate the 200th anniversary of his Farewell
Tour in the first city named for Lafayette and the only namesake city he visited. Come to Fayetteville, North Carolina on March 4-5 and party like it’s 1825!

Tuesday afternoon, March 4 – Reenact Lafayette’s arrival with music, speeches, and flag-waving as he enters town in a horse-drawn carriage accompanied by the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry – his bodyguard 200 years ago!

Tuesday evening, March 4 – Polish your dance moves at an authentic Regency Period costume ball in the elegant Orangery of the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens. Dance Master Charles Steplively of Virginia and the historical musicians of Syllabub will make this a truly magical experience for you.

Wednesday, March 5 – Explore Fayetteville’s 250-year history on the Lafayette Trail Tour and beyond! See his carriage and the four-poster bed where he slept. See the Liberty Point Resolves, signed by local patriots a full year before the Declaration of Independence. Visit Methodist University and view their collection of 200-year-old Lafayette souvenirs, one of the largest such collections in the United States.

Wednesday evening, March 5 – Enjoy an elegant dinner at the botanical gardens with live music and
theatrical portrayals of scenes from Lafayette’s visit. Professional actors from Sweet Tea Shakespeare will entertain you as you meet some of “Fayetteville’s Finest” of 1825!

Special events for AFL members are being planned. For more information on how you can participate in this once-in-a-lifetime event, visit the bicentennial page at www.lafayettesociety.org
