
Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour Visits Milledgeville, GA

The Milledgeville venue will be the crown jewel of the Georgia stops, offering an immersive and historically rich experience. Several dedicated Milledgeville citizens have worked tirelessly to curate an itinerary that honors Lafayette’s grand tour and showcases the city’s pivotal role in Georgia’s past. As Georgia’s capital in 1825, Milledgeville was a hub of political and social activity during Lafayette’s original visit.
A block of rooms (block name “Lafayette Festivities”) has been reserved at the Fairfield Inn, 2631-A North Columbia St., for $129 per night.
9:00 AM – Celebratory Opening Ceremony (no charge)
Location: Old Capitol Building, Georgia Military College (GMC) 201 E. Greene St.
The historic Old Capitol Building, which served as Georgia’s statehouse during Lafayette’s 1825 visit, will provide a fitting backdrop for this grand opening event. The Georgia Military College Corps of Cadets will stand in formation alongside members of the Milledgeville community, adding a dignified military presence reminiscent of the honor given to Lafayette two centuries ago. The Mayor of Milledgeville and Baldwin County Commission Chair will issue proclamations, officially recognizing this bicentennial celebration. 11:15 AM – Benevolent Lodge #3
Location: 102 E Hancock St
Freemasonry played a significant role in Lafayette’s life, and his 1825 visit to Milledgeville included a special reception by the local Masons. In 2025, the Benevolent Lodge #3 is honored to host Lafayette and will highlight Lafayette’s connection to Freemasonry and feature the restored chair on which Lafayette himself sat during his visit—a rare and treasured artifact. Attendees will witness a solemn and historically rich tribute to the Brotherhood of Freemasons and Lafayette’s ideals of liberty and fraternity. (Tim Prosser, Chair)
2:30 PM – Memory Hill Cemetery
Location: 300 Franklin St.
A solemn and poignant moment of the day, this visit to Memory Hill Cemetery will honor the Revolutionary War veterans buried in its historic grounds. Lafayette, portrayed by a distinguished reenactor, will pay his respects alongside members of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the American Friends of Lafayette (AFL), and other patriots. A wreath-laying ceremony will serve as a tribute to those who fought for American independence, reinforcing the deep gratitude Lafayette expressed for their sacrifices during his 1825 tour. 6:30 PM – 200th Anniversary Lafayette Grand Reception ($50, registration required)
Location: Lockerly Arboretum – Rose Hill Mansion 1534 Irwinton Rd.
Set amidst the breathtaking grounds of the Lockerly Arboretum, the elegant Rose Hill Mansion will host a grandeur-filled reception celebrating the 200th anniversary of Lafayette’s visit. This exclusive event will feature:
A formal toast to Lafayette by local dignitaries, recalling the hospitality he received in
1825.
Live performances by local musicians will create the festive spirit of the era.
Heavy hors d’oeuvres paired with tea, lemonade, water, coffee, and a dessert tray. A cash bar will be available.
This unforgettable evening will transport guests back to the early 19th century, capturing the
elegance and reverence of Lafayette’s historic journey.
