Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour 1st Stop in Worcester, MA

September 3, 2024 @ 11:30 am 1:00 pm

On September 3rd, Lafayette was welcomed into Worcester by a committee of arrangements led by Judge Levi Lincoln.  Upon reaching the Paine estate, Lafayette passed under a “display of flags, as a national salute was fired and bells started ringing.”

The Colonel Timothy Bigelow Chapter of the DAR is planning to host General Lafayette at the Paine estate, now known as “The Oaks” at 140 Lincoln Street, Worcester, MA.

General Lafayette (and his entourage in historical costume) will arrive at The Oaks.  He will be greeted by attendees in 1820 Regency style dress as we wave handkerchiefs and ribbons with his image (see photo). These women in historic dress will also wear white gloves with the image of Lafayette.  He will enter the property under an arch of greenery and French flags. A contingent of 6-8 militiamen from the Boxborough Militiamen will provide a drummer, honor guard, and military salute with musket fire.

Attendees will greet Lafayette with the wringing of bells as occurred in 1824.

Two musicians playing clarinet will lead a small group of us singing La Marsellaise in French.

Lafayette will remain at the Oaks until just before 1:00 pm when he will proceed to
the Worcester Common for the 2nd Worcester event.
