LAFAYETTE BICENTENNIAL DAY
22 May 2025, 1:00 PM – Gallipolis City Park, 334 Second Avenue, Gallipolis, OH
While enjoying an amazing view of the Ohio River in Gallipolis’s historic district, relive history with a reenactment of the arrival of Gen. Lafayette, as portrayed by the renowned Michael Halbert, and including Lafayette’s actual welcome speech as recorded by the local newspaper of the time. Lafayette will be joined by an accompaniment of other historical figures such as Samuel Vinton, portrayed by descendants and others. Perhaps one of Lafayette’s most sentimental stops, this celebration will be packed with free events including a flag ceremony and cannon salute by a multi-chapter collaborative of the Sons of the American Revolution in Ohio and West Virginia, period-inspired kids’ games hosted by the Gallia-Vinton Education Service Center, meet and greet with our actors, dedication of a new Ohio Historic Marker along the riverfront, viewing of a special floral display by Gallipolis in Bloom, national historic panels viewing and a locally painted mural unveiled, and culminating with a multi-school high school band concert featuring period music and led by award-winning musicians Kendra Ward and Bob Bence. Open to the public; no admission.
While in town, don’t forget to make time to visit the Our House Tavern Museum, which features one of Lafayette’s coats on display. Other area museums include the John Gee Black Historical Center, French Art Colony galleries, Ohio Tattoo Museum, and the Gallipolis Railroad and Freight Station Museum.
