Grave Making: Aquila Deaver

July 22, 2025 @ 2:00 pm3:00 pm

Aquila Deaver was a soldier in the Maryland Militia during the American Revolution who reportedly assisted Lafayette when his boat foundered on rocks while crossing the Susquehanna River in April 1781. Local histories report that Deaver carried Lafayette to shore. Further, local stories say that Deaver stood in line to greet Lafayette when he stopped in Port Deposit on July 29, 1825, and that Lafayette remembered him and greeted him warmly.  In 1835, Deaver was buried on his farm in Darlington, MD, but his remains were moved to Angel Hill Cemetery in 1898 and reinterred in a section of the cemetery reserved for the graves of Union veterans of the Civil War. The Governor William Paca Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will place a plaque on the grave of Aquila Deaver honoring his service during the Revolution.
