(Free event, but registration required)

Experience history firsthand as the city of Sparta pays tribute to General Lafayette with a grand commemoration. This special event will begin at 10 AM, honoring Lafayette’s momentous visit to Georgia in 1825.

The festivities will commence with a stirring parade forming at 21 Boland St., featuring a horse-drawn carriage carrying the esteemed General Lafayette, reminiscent of his warm welcome across Georgia two centuries ago. The procession will wind through Sparta’s historic streets, culminating at the revered Old Eagle Tavern & Marker, now known as Drummers Home.

Distinguished city officials and General Lafayette himself will deliver formal greetings, expressing Sparta’s deep gratitude for his unwavering support during the American Revolution. The event will also feature a rendition of La Marseillaise, followed by the dedication of a Lafayette Historical Marker.

Following the ceremony, Lafayette will be escorted to Sparta City Cemetery, where the newly restored graves of seven Revolutionary War veterans—founders of Sparta—will be recognized. Members of the Sons of the American Revolution, dressed in period uniform, will pay tribute with a solemn musket salute.

A reception for American Friends of Lafayette dignitaries and other invited guests will follow the cemetery ceremony. Current plans are to host this gathering at Glen Mary Plantation. All events are expected to conclude by 2 PM.
